Question Answer
How did you showcase tangible value for Business…since top management focuses on ROI …(lot of people still view DG as necessary only from Regulatory purposes eg. OSFI This is difficult to do, but so important. You can focus on things like Savings due to lack of fines, etc.
What kind of metrics should be shared during Data Governance council meetings? Usage and adoption metrics for Collibra are important. But, as in the question above, focusing on the business metrics will get you more meaningful buy-in. Things like
Should Data Governance be restricted only to metadata or also to actual data ? It really is for both. Remember that metadata is just the info about your data, so understanding that allows you to understand and do more with your actual data, as well.
How can Collibra help to bring data together? (Related: what is Collibra’s main role with DG) Collibra helps in so many ways! Including consolidating/relating data, enacting clear definitions of account types, contact types/roles, and optimizing process/data interactions - just to name a few. Collibra allows you to trust your data.
How do you get stewards who are dedicated to the cause and not juggling 200 other priorities? By getting exec buy-in and participation, you’ll be able to rebalance priorities of stewards so they are enabled to do the work and empowering them to do the work by giving them the education and skills they need. Most of the time, the work of governance and stewardship is already happening to some extent - it’s less about assigning a steward but finding who’s already doing the work. You can show them the value of having structure, formality to the program, and then documenting the info, which they can then share across the organization. This allows them to show their expertise and make their knowledge scaleable. If the steward doesn’t recognize the pain point yet, bring in folks who are feeling the pain of not having a better, formalized process.
Could you also share the different roles you have in place and main tasks and responsibilities? All of us will have different role names but all task and responsibilities should be covered… Here are some assets to help you with this: https://community.collibra.com/forum/t/key-roles-and-responsibilities-for-data-governance/2969
How do you resolve disagreement on CDE definition used by different business units? Start by showing all the CDE that you all agree on. That gets everyone in the mode of consensus. Then move to the disparities and see if it’s a matter of naming/language or if there really is a difference. Finally, then you can hash it out on the differences and whether to add specific CDE for particular needs.
